Winter is the season clients ask me about most, mostly because it’s the one where “just add some branches” goes wrong fastest. A good winter planter isn’t a bundle of greenery jammed into soil — it’s built in the same layers as any other season, just with fresh-cut evergreens standing in for live plants. Here’s exactly what goes into ours, and why.
The Base: Fresh-Cut Greens, Not Fake
Every kit starts with a mixed base of fresh cedar, pine, and magnolia — three different textures and two different greens so the arrangement doesn’t read as flat. Fresh-cut greens hold their color and fragrance through most of the season in our climate, and they’re what give the finished planter that full, professionally-built look rather than a few sad sprigs poking out of dirt.
The Focal Point
Every winter design needs one thing the eye lands on first. In our kits that’s usually a lantern, a birch bundle, or a cluster of oversized ornaments — something with real presence that reads from the street, not just up close on the porch.
The Accents That Make It Feel Finished
- Pinecones and dried pods for natural texture and weight low in the arrangement
- Berry stems (red or white) for a hit of color against all the green
- Ribbon or dried grasses for movement
- A flameless candle or string lights so the planter still does its job after dark, which is most of a Canadian winter afternoon
The goal with every accent is restraint — two or three, chosen well, always beat six competing for attention.
