The Christmas Planter Countdown

Winter planter with birch, gold ornaments and cedar

Plan a welcoming winter entrance one step at a time. These dates are a guide for Southern Ontario. Adjust them to your local weather and build while the soil is still workable. How long cut greens stay fresh depends on the materials and exposure.

October

Choose the container and colours

Check that the pot is winter rated, drains freely and suits the entrance. Photograph the door and choose a main colour, a supporting colour and a small accent. A pair can frame a wide entrance; one good pot suits a smaller landing.

October, before build day

Prepare the pot

Clear the drainage holes and check for cracks. Put the pot in its final position. Leave enough workable soil close to the rim to anchor the cut stems deeply. Follow the container maker’s winter-care directions.

Late October to early November

Gather your materials

Start with tall branches, three complementary greens, a different leaf or texture and your finishing accents. Adjust quantities to the pot and stem fullness. Check current stock and kit contents; styled photos may show separately supplied items.

Cool weather, before the soil freezes

Build the four layers

Early November is often useful in Southern Ontario, but check your local forecast. Set height first, build the generous base with a drape over the rim, add texture and the focal point, then finish with accents. After inserting the cut stems, water the soil thoroughly and let excess water drain.

After the build

Check the entrance after dark

Use outdoor-rated lights and follow the maker’s instructions for batteries and weather protection. Keep cords out of the walkway. Look at the entrance from the path and adjust while the stems and soil are workable.

Throughout winter, especially during thaws

Check the greens and moisture

After inserting the cut stems, water the soil thoroughly and let excess water drain. During a thaw, check the soil and water only if it is drying out and drains freely. Do not water frozen or waterlogged soil. Sun, wind and warmth can dry greens sooner, so refresh tired stems as needed. Brush loose snow off gently. Wait for a thaw before bending stems or changing the arrangement. Rooted plants need separate winter-care advice.

January to March

Refresh for the next season

Remove the Christmas details when you are ready, keep the branches and texture you like, and replace tired greens as needed. Wait until the soil is workable before taking stems out. Save sound branches and decorations for another season.
